Strip Shows in the 70s

If you ask people what was so famous about the Kowloon Walled City, they would probably say “Yellow – Gambling – Poisons” (黃賭毒) meaning prostitution, gambling, and drugs.”

Chris wrote about his experience in the 1970s when he was a secondary student. As teenagers, Chris and his classmates were very interested in sex. They would share porn magazines and erotic literature with one another in school. After hearing about the blue movies and strip shows in the Kowloon Walled city, they decided to see it with their own eyes.

The name of the strip show place was called “「華聲」” (Wah Sing). For those who lived near Kowloon Walled City, they could go their by themselves. However, if you live far away, and if you wanted more customer service, there were special vehicles picking up customers near the “Bunyan tree head” (榕樹頭) in Yau Ma Tei, near the Temple Street and Public Square Street. It is impossible to miss the pick up location as there was a man shouting “Wah Sing, Wah Sing, departing soon, departing soon!”

The car would take you all the way from Yau Ma Tei to Kowloon City and then you walked a short distance into the Kowloon Walled City.

Chris remember the day when he and his classmates went to the Kowloon Walled City in the middle of the day. Their “tourist guide” was one of the classmates who went there a few days ago. When this classmate was there, he met a drug addict who asked him “Are you looking for Wah Sing?” After collecting a few bucks from this teenager, this drug addict took him to there.

The entrance fee for Wah Sing is $5 for one set of tickets. The first show was a blue move. It cost you one ticket.  According to Chris, the “movie” only lasted for a few minutes. The real thing came after that – the life show. A guy came in shouting, “Tickets! Tickets! Get you ticket ready! If you don’t have a ticket, get your money ready!”

Then, as the music started, a young gal came out and started “dancing.” It was nothing more than standing there moving her body a little bit. She was already naked when she entered the stage. Much of her face was covered by by her long hair. Just like that, it was not even a strip show! Then, after one song, she left. And it was time for another blue movie. One more ticket.

On their way out, Chris and his classmates were stopped by a pimp asking them, “Want a chick? Young chick?”

Ah Ngoi went to the Kowloon Walled City in 1969, a few years before Chris. Unlike Chris, Ah Ngoi went in the evening time. He watched 3 blue movies and 2 life shows. One live show had 2 naked gals “dancing” while the other one involved a gal and a real snake. It looks like as if the gal is using the snake as a sponge for her shower.
